Goodbye, my Friend.

Published by trudee at 2:47 pm under Just chattin'

shelbyaug2007.jpg

This afternoon I said goodbye to my chocolate girl, Shelby. I had hoped and prayed that she would make it through Christmas, and she did. Shelby was the most beautiful soul. Always happy, always ready to retrieve a ball or a toy. She loved to retrieve, and was so good at it.

At age 13, she lived a long, happy life. Even so, it never feels like it’s been long enough. So today, she is on her journey to the Bridge, where she will see her brothers Tyler and Zack. She is free from her old, tired body, and will once again be able to retrieve her toy like she used to do.

Goodbye my sweet chocolatey Shel-belle. I look forward to the day that I can bury my face in your neck again. Your pawprints will remain on my heart forever.

Sis, we are so sorry for your loss. I am glad that we had the chance to meet her and see what a special dog she was. She made it through the holidays and is on her journey back to see her old playmate. I found this and thought it was appropriate:

    THE EULOGY
    Look not where I was
    For I am not there
    My spirit is free
    I am everywhere

In the air that you breathe
In the sounds that you hear
    Don’t cry for me Mom
    My spirit is near

    I’ll watch for you
    From the other side
    I’ll be the one running
    New friends by my side

    Smile at my memory
    Remember in your heart
    This isn’t the end
    It’s a brand new start

    Love ya lots! Ellen

I am truly sorry for your loss Trudee, but I am glad you did at least get one more Christmas with her.

Animals can touch our hearts in a way that it seems like no matter how long they’re in your life, it’s never long enough.

Your picture above captures a lot of emotion in her eyes. I’m sure she misses you as much as you miss her.

So sorry for your loss. That is so sad. We lost a beloved cat two years ago. She was 18 years old. We had our kids read this at her eulogy:

    Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

Unless you have experienced the loss of a beloved friend, I don’t think you can truly understand the pain one feels. It took me almost 30 years to finally get a new friend that we brought home the day after Christmas. I feel your loss and I wish you comfort in knowing she is in a far better place - her body young again and no more pain. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

    Trudee,
I visit your blog almost daily and I knew Shelby was ill. When I saw that beautiful picture of your beloved Shelby and the headline, I cried……it brought back memories of the day 4 years ago that we had to put down our very dear Chelsea. She was a beagle that melted your heart. When she passed away, it was the saddest day. I thought that she could never be replaced. I searched for another beagle and two months later, we bought another beagle puppy, Cassie. I call her my Angel from Heaven, sent to us by our beloved, Chelsea. May one day, an angel from Shelby be sent to you, to fill your heart with love. Hugs to you!!! :)

I’m sorry, Trudee. I’ve shed a tear for you tonight. It’s hard to let go of that many years together. I do know how this feels. Our Otto strayed in, a white fluffy puppy, when our son was 6 yrs old and died, a big white fluffy beloved family member, when our son was 18. Our sorrow was indescribable because we grieved, not only for our own loss, but for our son, who’d lost the constant companion with whom he’d been raised. Just know there are many of us who understand this kind of loss and our hearts reach out to yours at this sad news.

I’m so sorry to learn that you lost a beloved pet. Even if you know it’s coming, it doesn’t make it any easier. My condolences to you and your family. When we lost our own sweet fur baby last year, I learned of a fantastic website where you can build a memorial to your pet. It helped ease our own grief and perhaps it might work to ease yours too. If you feel like checking it out, go to critters.com and look up Tessa under dogs. She was a black & white whippet and my 4th child. God bless you.

I am an animal lover and we now have 2 cats age 14 & 15. We are getting to that crossroad for our oldest one as she still gets around well, but is starting to miss the litter box and being very irritable w/our younger cat even though they have been together for 14 years! I know how you feel and they will always hold a place in our hearts. I hope that you remember all the times you had. There is a poem someone gave me just this week after finding out our dog passed away. I know it will be a long post, but I hope you enjoy it as much as I have…

    The Rainbow Bridge
There is a bridge connecting Heave and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other.

There is only one thing missing. They are not with thier special person who loved them on Earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group!

You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.

Trudy, the news of the loss of your you sweet fur baby saddens me. Reading this, brings tears to my eyes. Shelby was so blessed to have someone like you in her life who loved her so much. ( If I remember correctly, you rescued her.) My old guy, is 13 1/2 and has out lived his life expectancy so I know his days are really numbered. I lost my beloved 5 yr old in November. He was my best friend. To help me with my grief, I fostered a sick 1 1/2 yr old dog. Needless to say I have adopted this wonderful boy and we are working on getting him well. He has been my angel in disguise. Take comfort in knowing that she is no longer hurting and is running free at the Bridge. Godspeed sweet Shelby.

The first time I read your post, I cried and minimized the window; the second time, I cried again; tears for your loss, for the wonderful friend that you have lost.
I hope you know that other animal lovers feel your sorrow, and we understand how hard it is to lose our precious pets.
I know you have many happy memories of your Shelby, and you will always hold those in your heart. My sincere sympathy to you and yours…GREAT BIG HUGS from me to you.

So sorry, Trudee. Tears spring to my eyes - we’ve been there, too with our Golden mix, Bud, two years ago around this time. Although we have Chrissy Girl now, he will always be Our Boy - so I can truly relate to what you are going through. Some day……

Such a sweet looking friend…I’m very sorry for your loss.

  103. Ashley Beston 13 Jan 2008 at 12:03 am

I am sorry for your loss. I know how it feels to loose a treasured friend like Shelby. I lost two of my fuzzy friends this past year and though time has passed, my heart aches from time to time. Knowing that there are other people out there that understand your pain seems to help. I hope you know that you can post your feelings when ever you feel the need.

Below I have typed up a poem my mom found years ago. She placed it on a quilt for my brother that she made shortly after his (our) Alaskan Malamute, Juneau, died. It had pictures of Juneau and my brother fused into the fabric.
I hope that you will find some peace in the words written here and by all of us.

……..For if the dog be well remembered,
if sometimes she leaps through your dreams actual as in life,
    eyes kindling, laughing, begging,
it matters not where that dog sleeps.

On a hill where the wind is unrebuked and the trees are roaring,
or romping on a hillside she knew in puppyhood.
It is all one to the dog, and all one to you,
and nothing is and nothing lost– if memory lives.

But there is one best place to bury a dog.
The one best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of
    her master.

Trudee…My heart goes out to you at this time. I know full well the sadness you are feeling. We just recently said good-bye to our own dear four-footed friend. Sadly he did not make it past Christmas. If you visit my blog: http://faithartistry.blogspot.com there is a post there about our beloved Rebel. I know you loved your Shelby very much and share in your loss. I bet she’s happy & is meeting new friends like our Rebel right now! They will of course forever be a part of our lives. My heartfelt sympathy to you & your family for your loss. Ida

I’m so sorry, Trudee. I can hardly see to type this through my tears. Sending hugs and prayers your way.

  107. Cherylon 13 Jan 2008 at 8:24 am

I had to wait a day to reply, I just couldn’t get my thoughts together. I’m still not sure that they are. I just can’t tell you how sorry I am for the loss of your baby Shelby. A short poem for you: Again I’m so sorry that this had to happen. Hugs to all of you!!!

To have loved and then said farewell, is better than to have never loved at all.
For all of the times that you have stooped and touched my head, fed me my favorite treat and returned the love that I so unconditionally gave to you.
For the care that you gave to me so unselfishly.
For all of these things I am grateful and thankful.

I ask that you not grieve for the loss, but rejoice in the fact that we lived, loved and touched each others lives. My life was fuller because you were there, not as a master/owner, but as my FRIEND.

Today I am as I was in my youth. The grass is always green, butterflies flit among the flowers and the Sun shines gently down upon all of God’s creatures.
I can run, jump, play and do all of the things that I did in my youth. There is no sickness, no aching joints and no regrets and no aging.

We await the arrival of our lifelong companions and know that togetherness is forever.
You live in our hearts as we do in yours. Companions such as you are so rare and unique.
Don’t hold the love that you have within yourself. Give it to another like me and then I will live forever. For love never really dies, and you are loved and missed as surely as we are.

I have just read this for the first time, so sorry to hear of your recent loss! They become so much of a part of your family, it’s so hard to let them go, glad you were able to spend one last Christmas with Shelby, may only good memories be yours!

It was hard to write this without tears in my eyes. I am so very sorry for your loss of your beautiful fur child. Shelby was a very lucky dog and as you said, will be able to continue her “life” running and doing all the things she loved to do. The pain will ease but you will never forget how special she was to all of you. Our Sammy went to a better place the end of June and I still miss him so very much! I know I will get to see him again some day and that he is wagging his tail as he watches all we do that he loved to join in with. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Janet in NC

I’m so sorry to hear of your loss… it’s always so heartbreaking to lose a beloved pet. You seem to have a very loving and understanding outlook on it knowing that she’s no longer in a tired body and is enjoying things from the other side now. Your love for her and hers for you will never change, and that’s a bit of comfort despite how hard it is to say goodbye to the phycial her. My thoughts are with you. Blessings~

I can only imagine, my Cocoa is 10 years old, Ebony is turning 2 on Friday, Zorro won’t be 1 until May 13th, and I have 8 new puppies that’ll be six weeks on Friday.

Needless to say, I think labs are the greatest! Why wouldn’t anybody want to breed them?

Trudee, I “stumbled” upon your site today..I too know your hurt. We also said good-bye to our Golen , on July 4th….we missed her this Christmas even more as she always knew that she had a gift/toy waiting for her. I especially miss her “smile” and soft nuzzle as well. And, like you , I plan to hug her again. We were so blessed, she was 17!!! And, had two surguries for cancer 3 yr. apart…and continued to live 5 yrs after that. Our vet even said that she was a trooper and very special. And yes, I drop tears even as I type…..Blessings to you, Lori

  131. Maryon 23 Jan 2008 at 2:08 am

I never visited your blog before today but just had to send my condolences. Your Shelby will always be with you. Our beloved pets become parts of our hearts and souls. Their love is unconditional and their trust is complete. My Sugar Bear was 13 when she could finally no longer fight her cancer. After two surgeries and three years of never complaining, she woke me one night whimpering in pain. I held her through the night until our vet opened and we could relieve her misery. That was almost three years ago, and I still cry every time I think of her. It is hard to let them go when you love them so much. My tears flow as I type, some are for your loss and some are still for mine.
    My deepest sympathy,
    -mary

I have been surfing down through all your blog posts and found this heart breaking one. I am a dog and cat nut and have three babies that live in my home with Bob and I. One is my 13 year old chocolate brown, eight lb poodle, Bailey. Ugh! I can hardly stand the thought of loosing her. I am sorry you lost your darling Shelby! There is nothing like the unconditional love and acceptance of a dog’s love. I hope I am not bringing up a sadness since it has been a while since you lost Shelby, but I wanted to let you know how sad I am for you! Get a new baby soon!
