So Touched…

Published by trudee at 11:48 am under Just chattin'

This morning I went to my Veterinary office to pick up Shelby’s ashes. I had prepared myself for it, and was looking forward to bringing her back home.
As Brenda approached me, she had something else in her hand. She held out this small round disc, and said,”We wanted you to have a special memory of Shelby.” This is what it was:

I was so touched by their love and kindness. I never expected to receive such a precious gift. I hope it warms your heart as much as it has mine.

That is a very special momento. Kudos to your vet for being so thoughtful. Again, I am so sorry for your loss. It breaks my heart every time I hear of someone’s beloved pet (and family member) passing away. You and your family are in my prayers.

what an incredibly thoughtful gift. I am a way over the top animal lover and it just makes me tear up to know that they cared enough about your furry life companion and you to do this. You have a gem of a vet, and I have a candle lit for your furkid’s journey. May it be filled with awe and joy, and may the love of friends you’ve never met but made here help sustain you.

What a beautiful and precious gift that I know you’ll treasure forever, Trudee. I don’t know if you’ve noticed this before, but I’ve just recently come to notice, as you can see in this beautiful paw print, that the lower pad in their paw is an upside down heart shape. A beautiful sign of the abundant and unconditional love they give us.

    Big hugs,

    Hi Trudee -

I can’t get the tears out of my eyes….what a wonderful gift from your vet. I so wish I had such a tangible memory of my Sadie. I kept her soiled litter box in the garage for three months because her footprints were in it….then one day my husband bumped it and they were gone.

Your vet is very special and I know that Shelby is will always be with you.

It is so hard to write you through the tears and sobs. I am so truly touched that they would think to do that. I still have not washed off my Sammie-dog’s nose prints from inside my car. Sammie died the end of June. I would have loved having his pawprint. You will have peace and will smile many times as you remember all those wonderful things your fur-baby did. Janet in NC

The first Christmas after we adopted our Rottie, I used her little paw print (with mud, not ink) on a gift tag to my husband. She has been gone many years now, but I still have that precious little gift card.

That is so sweet. We give these to clients as well ( I work at a vet’s office) and I just think it is a wonderful momento and memory of your pet. My mom was saying she wished her vet did this for her.

  32. Micheleon 15 Jan 2008 at 8:15 pm

That is a nice thing for the vet to do. Our vet did the same thing, so unexpectedly. It was mailed to me a couple of weeks after putting our Pomeranian, Molly down. I of course was touched, but also a crying mess! My heart goes out to you, I know how hard it is to lose a special pet. HUGS!

  33. Bethon 15 Jan 2008 at 8:35 pm

What a wonderful thing to have to remember Shelby…how awesome. My husband is a Vet, but not in practice. I will have to tell him what a special thing your Vet has done for you. Your precious Shelby will be forever imprinted on your hearts, as well as the plaster. Beautiful.

What a wonderful gift your vet gave to you. I am in tears reading your post, but then I thought a Happy Thought that your Shelby and mine are running around and playing ball just like they used to be able to do. I am so sorry for your loss. I have my Shelbie dogs paw print also, I just had it blessed this year at the blessing of the animals. maybe that is something that you can do also.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

That is so sweet! When my Barney had to be put down, I received a similar paw print disc in the mail days later with a sweet note. I stood by my mailbox on the street crying it was so sweet!

I know you miss your furry friend. We all get so attached to our animals!

  44. GinaPon 16 Jan 2008 at 9:16 am

Oh, I’m crying… that’s so touching - and wonderful - and beyond words. I can’t imagine if they had done that for me when I put my precious cat down a few years ago. The vet sent a card to me with her picture on it in sympathy, but that paw print thing is even more special. How blessed you are. *sniff* I need to go compose myself again. Thanks for sharing this.

  45. Annon 16 Jan 2008 at 9:43 am

I think that is the nicest thing a vet can give. My daughter’s vet made two of these, one for her and one for the people to whom my daughter gave her precious Sid just weeks before Sid died due to the tainted pet treats that the new owners gave him. He was just the sweetest cat and I feel close to him when I see that little paw print plaque at my daughter’s house.

We had put our dog to rest a few years ago. He was our kids first dog. I wish our vet would have been so thoughtful. What a kind and generous thing to do. A random act of kindness we can all appreciate.

We lost our sweet Lucy, a beautiful golden retriever, early last summer at the wonderful age of 13. She was such a loved member of our family. When I saw your post about your sweet dog, it made me cry. Well,, today I cried again. We also have a wonderful vet that presented us with a wonderful keepsake. I think we both have been so lucky to have had these incredible animals in our lives.

I am so crying and missing my own right now. That is such a wonderful gift. There is nothing like experiencing the love and companionship of a dog. May your memories comfort during this difficult time. Ugh, where’s my tissues?!

  54. leslierichon 19 Jan 2008 at 12:24 am

When my precious Otto was put to sleep I broke down utterly and completely. If my vet had handed me something like this I would have toppled over the edge I was teetering on. This is the most incredibly thoughtful gesture.

  55. Libbyon 21 Jan 2008 at 7:55 am

Oh Trudee, I’m behind on my blogging and had missed your first post about Shelby until this morning. I’m so sorry for your loss. And I know all too well how special this is - when my sweet cat died (a very sudden & awful death) a while ago, my vet surprised me with the exact same thing. Glad your vet was just as wonderful!!

  56. Rose Annon 22 Jan 2008 at 1:01 am

Tears again. What a wonderful gesture and treasure!

  57. Karen Gladneyon 25 Jan 2008 at 10:44 am

Trudee what a beautiful gift that you vet gave to you. I have one like that two from a cat that I had to have put asleep a couple of years ago. The only difference is that they vet cut off a tiny bit of his fur and poked some of his fur into it as well. Silly thing is that something I feel his fur and talk to him. I even got a sympathy card when my cat had to be put asleep.

  58. qcbetty (QC)on 02 Feb 2008 at 9:52 am

Trudee, what a TOUCHING gift this is!

We have lost too many “furbabies” and I never stop grieving them……but I am happy that *my* Shelby is there to greet *your* Shelby!! :)

You’re lucky to have a great vet (like I do :)) - it makes it so much easier, doesn’t it….knowing they have had the best of care!

Big hugs - and I’m so sorry for your loss
